We have grown more than we had ever imagined and we need all the help we can muster to ensure that our mission of bringing people together to grow and share local, organic food is realized in a positive, educational and meaningful way. We have been working with Nathan McClintock and his PSU capstone class as well as facilitator, Maggie Starr to determine what the collective needs to be as awesome as it can be. The following is a list of volunteer opportunities that we need to fill to have a successful 2014 growing season. The 2014 growing season is right around the corner and we need YOU to join the collective and do what compels you to make local food growing and sharing real in the communities that we serve. Garden Manager

Responsible for the design, installation, maintenance and weekly harvest of one UFC garden…includes some amount of administrative duties; scheduling, announcing, leading and reporting volunteer hours for weekly educational work parties. Submits an annual garden plan and reports to garden manager coordinator.

Garden Manager Coordinator

Pre-season- Solicits, receives and reviews garden manager applications and assigns garden managers to shared land. Plans and executes Annual Plan Presentations. Plans and executes garden manager orientation and training.

Growing season- Facilitates mentorships between experienced and first time garden managers. Facilitates information sharing between garden managers and other support staff; greenhouse manager, compost crew, chicken crew, construction manager. Is the first point of contact for garden managers with regard to the resources needed to maintain their gardens (compost, mulch, seed, tools, transplants). Assists garden managers in getting the things they need when they need them.

Post-season- Facilitates garden manager de-briefing and appreciation potluck, makes recommendations for the following season and issues certificates of completion.

Greenhouse Manager

Responsible for ensuring that garden managers have veggie starts in the variety and quantity set forth in their annual plans. Solicits and coordinates greenhouse volunteer team.

Compost Manager

Responsible for ensuring that the UFC generates enough compost and compost tea to amend all gardens in the collective. Maintains compost pile at the Fertility garden throughout the year and assists garden managers in getting compost to UFC gardens.

Construction Manager

Responsible for assisting garden managers with hardscaping; fencing, trellising, benches, irrigation or any other construction-oriented garden need. Installs and maintains signage at all UFC gardens.

Chicken Flock Manager

Responsible for soliciting and retaining chicken crew members, ensuring that the bird houses and fencing are maintained and that the birds are fed and watered and the collection of eggs for our weekly UFC barter market OR to sell for the purposes of raising funds to pay the operating expenses of the collective gardens.

Truck Caretaker

Responsible for maintaining the UFC truck; annual oil changes, safety inspections, licensing and insurance.


Workshop Coordinator

Conceptualizes, organizes and implements regular UFC sponsored garden workshops.

Youth Garden Coordinator

Conceptualizes, organizes and implements Youth Garden programming.


Outreach Manager

Responsible for promoting the UFC and improving the collective’s name and brand recognition in the community; establishes and maintains promotional materials for tabling at events. Tables at community events and farmer’s markets. Writes and sends a monthly newsletter. Responsible for reaching out to and developing programs and community partnerships that would help UFC better serve those that would most benefit from our programs…the poor, children, elderly, immigrants.


Give!Guide Coordinator

Applies for and manages the marketing of the annual holiday Give!Guide; solicits matching donations from local area businesses, communicates with WW staff, attends meetings, markets Give!Guide on the UFC’s behalf. Sends thank you letters to Give!Guide donors, assists WW in delivering incentive gifts.

Sponsor a Garden Coordinator

Solicits sponsorships from local businesses and ensures that their names and brands are linked to our social network and promotional materials. Sends thank you letters to sponsors and maintains relationships with sponsors.

Grant Writer

Seeks out and writes grants on UFC behalf. All grants must be approved by OSALT.

Event Coordinator

Conceptualizing, organizing, marketing and executing two UFC events per year; the Spring Bike Tour and the Harvest Hoe Down Benefit.
