It all starts with the dirt!! The following folks have foregone income generation and instead opted to donate their land in order to improve access to healthy food for all NE neighbors. We would like to thank the following people for their generous land donations:
JoElla Turner,Dan Hatfield,Jay Kobak,Lisa Koluvek,Angela Goldsmith,Carol Singer and Jerry Haggerty,Koto Koshida,OSALT,St. Andrews church and Latricia Tillman.
Plants get thirsty! Some of our land sharers are also generous with their water. When land sharers do not have water piped into the property,we depend on neighbors for a water supply. Thanks to the following folks for their generous water contributions:
Lisa Koluvek,Joe and Justin Reardon,Lil Gilliken,Kristina Mustacich,Glenn Kessler,St. Andrews church,Emily Peterson and Koto Koshida.
Janette Kaden,Founder and Director:
Janette founded the UFC in 2009 and is also the owner of the Tin Shed garden café. Her commitment to local food, community building and her inclusive leadership style has propelled this project into its fourth season of bringing neighbors together around food.
Ari Rosner,Treasurer
Ari is in charge of all UFC finances as well as our continually developing produce exchange system. Ari works for Hollywood Farmers Market, and has volunteered many valuable hours with the UFC. He is on the board of OSALT,the community outreach committee for the Alberta Co-op Grocery,on the management team for Ariadne Garden and his latest passion is the Garden Marketplace Project, which seeks to close the gap between urban grower and consumer via bicycle delivery. Ari’s commitment to local food truly makes Portland a better city to live in.
Stephen Osserman
Stephen has been engaged with the UFC for two years as a grower, garden manager support and has been an integral part of the planning committee, designing and implementing high tech communications systems for our produce exchange system as well as designing and implementing our web-based mapping system. We would still be showing up to market with scraps of paper from each garden if it weren’t for Stephen’s contribution to the project.
Holli Prohaska,Produce Exchange Manager
Holli has been on the planning committee and the head in charge of our weekly produce exchange since its inception in 2009. Her commitment to local food and improving food security has propelled the UFC to places we never expected to go and are so glad to be there. This year, she’ll be throwing her hat into one of the gardens, working with Kayla Preece at the Common Bond.
Neighborhood Garden Managers:
Holly Markham - Holly has ten years of experience working in commercial farming,cut-flowers,gardening and landscaping. She worked at an organic teaching and research CSA farm at Michigan State University for five years, created her own small cut flower business and is currently employed as a gardener. Holly is moving into her third season with the UFC. We were so lucky to have her experience and leadership last year and are doubly blessed to get to work with her again. Holly co-manages the Singer Garden Greenhouse on 6th and Mason.
Reid Smith - Reid is moving into his second season with the UFC,managing the Whiskerton Garden on NE 57th and Simpson using permaculture principals and with the steady hands of two returning apprentices,Kyla Springer and Erika.
Kayla Preece- Kayla is our resident seed ambassador and the manger for Common Bond Garden on NE 8th and Alberta.
Angela Goldsmith- Angela has been a champion for local, sustainable food for longer than the UFC has been in existence. She entrusted her land to OSALT and agreed to be the first person to allow de-pave to remove the concrete from her property. Now,Fargo Forest Garden is a maturing food forest on NE Williams and Fargo that promises to provide the community with loads of fresh fruit, birds, bees and all things good.
We are happy to introduce our new Garden Managers for the 2012 growing season! More about them to come.
Sarah McClure- Sarah grew up helping her parents with their vegetable garden and animals in the flatlands of rural Michigan. After coming to Oregon on a hiking trip in 2008,she fell deeply in love with the Cascades and decided to relocate. She will spend the season managing Our Garden on NE Garfield and Failing. When not growing (and eating) food,Sarah also volunteers for Kitchen Commons,a group working to expand community kitchen use in North and Northeast Portland.
Genevieve Flanagan- Genevieve grew up mostly barefoot in Southern Florida. After college she moved to the desert for ayear, met her husband, and together they moved to beautiful Portland. Her background is in organic vegetable farming, but she is also proud to be a former Master Gardner and a certified Desert Landscaper (not as useful here, but so worth it!). This year she’ll be managing the Koluvek Garden on NE 7th and Skidmore,so stop by if you see her out there!
