How can I help?
You can help us fund this grass-roots movement by becoming a contributing member. You can help is manifest it by becoming an active member. Active members may get involved with the UFC in one of four ways; as a grower, land sharer, working member or administrator.
Growers: are folks who have established gardens who would like to use the UFC barter system to exchange excess produce. Growers receive barter bucks for the produce they contribute to the market. If you have fruit or nut trees or a bumper crop of cucumbers, this is a great way to get involved.
Land sharers: are folks who own un-productive land and support the idea of it being used for sustainable, urban agriculture, education and community enrichment.
Working Members:are those folks who work in the gardens that provide the barter market with the bulk of its produce.
Administrators: are the folks who help with the planning and execution of our mission.
Benefits of UFC membership:
- Access to a network of gardening professionals
- Access to local, organic, sustainably grown veggies
- Significant saving on your grocery bill from participation in the barter economy
- Free UFC sponsored workshops
- Discounted UFC starts
- Good, clean fun at our Annual UFC Harvest Party; a family friendly celebration with ‘drawing faces on your food’ a participatory art project, story telling and music.
- A good feeling knowing that a portion of your food will be donated to charity
- Meeting new people who have grown your food
- Hopefully, making life-long friends
As an active member of the UFC, you may serve as a grower, a land sharer, a working member or an administrator. For every labor hour you contribute, you earn one barter share. (affectionately referred to as slugs). With these barter shares, you may purchase local, organic produce, grown in your neighborhood, by your neighbors. If you have more than enough produce, you may use your barter shares to purchase labor hours from the collective or make independent exchanges within the collective membership. All produce remaining at the end of the barter market will be delivered to neighborhoods with poor access to fresh fruits and vegetables and/or donated to the boys and girls club kitchen in Northeast Portland.
